50th Beanpot goes to… who else?

BU won. Such a great game – Northeastern has quite a good team this year. Funnily, with 1:18 left in the game, the score tied, the projector suddenly switches channel to the Cartoon Network, and Scooby Doo. About 500 students started to holler and scream, and when some staff member ran to the booth to switch it back, BU had scored! What fucking timing! (More evidence that BU is satan.) just kidding. BU won 5-3 (with an empty-netter).

50th Beanpot

Going to a Beanpot watching party at BU. Should be interesting. BC won’t be in it though (cos BU beat them last week), but i’m sure there will be “BC sucks” chants anyway.

Tugboat Annie making some scratch

Tugboat Annie was a staple Buffalo indie-power-pop outfit for years, but they never did break out. So, after a move to Boston a few years ago, they’ve put out a few really good records (and a kooky low-budget video) and now they’re getting a profile boost from Boston-based monster.com, in a new series of television commercials. Watch the Olympic coverage (NBC, MSNBC) for the monster ads, which feature the song “More“.

Olympics – Day four

Ok, given what I said about the Salt Lake Opening Ceremonies, the coverage I’ve seen has been really quite good. I watched the women’s 15k biathlon, which is this grueling cross-country skiing sport where you have to shoot out targets as big as a quarter – except that they’re 200 yards away. amazing.

And now the Women’s Ice Hockey Canada vs. Kazakhstan is on, and it’s a totally different game from what I’m used to watching in the NHL. It’s fascinating… especially the Kazakhs, because they’re getting outshot 16-0 in the first period, but their goaltender trunova is keeping them in it. That woman is quite an athlete. Every time the Kazakhs come out of their zone, they get stood up or poked at the Canadia blue line… they just can’t crack it. Even on the powerplay, they had no good chances. Canada looks physically about twice as big, but they’re not as fun to watch.

Still, you can’t stay in it long without a shot on goal.

Even Nogano was better

I am slightly embarrassed at the underwhelming nature of the Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Salt Lake City. The coverage courtesy Bob Costas and Katie Couric was, at times, laughable (Costas demanding “What am I doing” with the mic on), and at other times offensive (Costas smirking, “and here is Uzbekistan, a land-locked nation in central-Asia… They don’t have any chance here at these games.”) The Albertville ceremonies were fun and elegant, and Lillehammer was nothing short of awe-inspiring. And, although I wasn’t as impressed with Nagano, I think that Salt Lake showcased “Red-America” at its worst. I love that after the Native Americans completed their solemn flute playing and well-wishing, the white pioneers come rolling in with their tacky hats. OH! and the Asian-Pacific Railroad workers were curiously integrated into the hoedown. This county is so ahistoric sometimes.

It was one big American wank-off, and I think that The International Olympic Committee was correct in not allowing the U.S. team to carry in the WTC flag. As it was, it was the least international of any Olympic games I have ever seen. I’m a huge hockey fan, but i think that letting the ’80 hockey team light the torch was just boring. Atlanta got Muhammed Ali for christ sake. That guy is someone to admire. Why not get the ’80 US captain (a BU grad) and the ’80 Soviet captain to light it together? Too international? Is the cold war still being fought in Utah? Red-America isn’t the silent majority anymore.

New Layout – Version 2.0

I’ve finally got around to finishing up my new layout. I <3 etchings. It being February and all, i chose to combine ice imagery with a spring-like green color, hoping that it might be an interesting skitzo contrast. The type leans south because that's what my handwriting tends to do, unless i pay close attention to what i'm doing.

Also, I heard from Mary, and she promises that her site will be back soon. I’m crossing my fingers.

Pats Win

I haven’t cared about football in this city since… well, the last time the patriots went to the Superbowl. But tonight was so terrific, it almost erased the 4 consecutive Bills loses in the early-90s. The streets in Allston were ablaze: [View Pictures]
